The Community of Larchmont

Today and yesterday

TODAY

Larchmont Boulevard is located halfway between Downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica. The Larchmont Boulevard Community consists of the Hancock Park, Windsor Square, Larchmont Village, Fremont Place and Park La Brea neighborhoods.

The residential area around Larchmont Boulevard is one of the most historic in Los Angeles.

The heart of the community is Larchmont Boulevard, which got its start in the early 1920s and today contains a plethora of boutique retail stores, sidewalk cafes, a local barber shop, and much more. It’s also a great place to see your neighbors on the weekend or make new friends.

Several elements were responsible for the quaint small-town atmosphere of Larchmont Village.

YESTERDAY

photos of Larchmont through the years

In 1860, Major Henry Hancock took ownership of a large rancho in the middle of Los Angeles known as Rancho La Brea. The ranch gained its name because of the vast quantities of crude tar, or "brea", found beneath the surface. In fact, the current site of the La Brea Tar Pits was once the location of Hancock's oil derricks.

Those who have visited the Tar Pits know that Hancock found more than just crude oil at this site. During the 1870's he discovered a vast treasure trove of skeletons belonging not only to prehistoric creatures, but also to one human (believed to be an Indian woman who lived several thousand years ago).

The park, which contains both the skeleton collection and the Tar Pits, is called Hancock Park and is located to the west of La Brea Avenue. Hancock also owned much of the land to the east of this site, including the residential community bearing the family name.
